Axel Hotels opened its first hotel in Barcelona in 2003 and calls itself the world's first hotel chain for the LGBTQIA+ community, though everyone is welcome. All of its hotels are adults only. The city hotels are in Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Bilbao, San Sebastián and Berlin, and the Axel Beach hotels are in Ibiza, Maspalomas on Gran Canaria, Mykonos and Crete.

For UK travellers it's an option for a city break or a sunshine holiday where the hotel is part of the scene: most have a rooftop or poolside bar, wellness areas, and many host shows and parties. It suits couples and groups of friends who want a lively, central base, and anyone who wants to book direct for the flexible cancellation and loyalty discounts.

What's worth a look

Here are six of the hotels, from the original Barcelona address to the Greek islands.

Axel Hotel Barcelona is where the chain began, a modernist building in the heart of the Eixample with a rooftop, pool and fitness area. Its sister hotel, Axel TWO, is a quieter boutique option with a rooftop pool. For winter sun, Axel Beach Maspalomas has a palm-filled garden and pool parties in Playa del Inglés, a short walk from what Axel describes as the only LGBTQIA shopping centre in the world.

• Book direct for free cancellation until 6pm on the day of arrival at most hotels. It doesn't apply at Maspalomas or Ibiza, or to non-refundable offers.
• Stay three nights or more. Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, San Sebastián and Berlin all have minimum-stay discounts of 10% to 15%.
