Cartridge World started in Adelaide in 1992 and opened its first UK shop in Harrogate in 2001. Today the UK website is run from Knaresborough in North Yorkshire, and there are local Cartridge World stores too if you'd rather ask someone face to face. The main draw is its own-brand compatible cartridges, which cost less than the printer makers' originals and come with a two-year guarantee. Originals are on sale as well, so you can choose either.

It suits home printers who are tired of paying full price for HP, Canon, Epson or Brother cartridges, and offices, schools and small businesses that get through a lot of toner. You can search by printer model or cartridge number, switch prices between including and excluding VAT, and open a business account for repeat orders.

The compatible Brother TN-3480 toner is a good example of the savings: it's £39.99 against a listed MSRP of £60.48, it's rated at around 8,000 pages at 5% coverage, and it fits a long list of Brother HL-L, DCP-L and MFC-L laser printers. Canon PIXMA owners should look at the PGI-570/CLI-571 XL multipack, which was £22.99 for five cartridges. Cartridge World says its own-brand cartridges won't invalidate your printer's warranty, and each one is backed by its two-year guarantee.

Businesses can open an account for discounted pricing and dedicated UK support, and schools and local authorities have their own buying route. When a cartridge runs dry, Cartridge World also explains how to send empties back for reuse, remanufacturing or recycling rather than putting them in the bin.
