Compensair is an online claims service for air passengers. If your flight landed more than three hours late, was cancelled, or you were bumped off an overbooked plane, you may be owed compensation from the airline. Compensair checks your flight, prepares the paperwork, sends the claim and deals with the airline for you, including going to court through its partners if the airline won't pay. It's run by Compensair Ltd, a company registered in London in 2016.

It suits people who don't want to argue with an airline themselves, or who've already tried and been turned down. It covers the UK's own passenger rules (UK261) as well as EU 261/2004, plus Turkish and Canadian rules, and says it has claimed from more than 150 airlines.

What's worth a look

Six pages on the Compensair site to read before you claim.

The process is simple. You submit your flight details and a short description, sign a consent form, and Compensair's software assesses the case. It then sends the documents to the airline and keeps you updated through your personal profile. Some airlines reply within days, others take four to six weeks, and court cases can stretch to 16 to 20 weeks.

Start with the flight delay page, which explains when UK rules apply instead of EU ones: broadly, flights leaving a UK airport, and flights into the UK on a UK or EU airline. Compensair also has airline guides for carriers many of us fly with, such as easyJet, Ryanair and British Airways.

What it costs

Checking your flight is free and there's nothing to pay upfront. If the claim succeeds, Compensair keeps a success fee of 35% of the compensation. Its payment policy says it can add a further 10% legal fee if it has to pay for lawyers, court fees or translations, so in a court case the total can reach 45%. If nothing is recovered, you pay nothing.

Current offers

  • A free eligibility check on the homepage: enter your flight and it tells you whether you're likely to be owed anything.
  • No win, no fee: the FAQ confirms the fee is only charged after compensation is received.

How to save more

  • You can always claim from the airline yourself for free. A service like Compensair is most useful if the airline has already said no, or you don't have time to chase it.
  • Don't assume an old trip is too late. The FAQ says claims can go back two to six years depending on the airline and route, so it's worth checking past disruptions too.
  • Keep your booking reference, boarding pass and any messages from the airline about the delay. The form only takes a couple of minutes if you have them to hand.
