Cuddledown is a UK bedding brand that sells online through its own site. It sticks to what goes on a bed: duvets, pillows, linen and cotton bedding, protectors and storage bags. The brand says that selling direct, rather than through other shops, keeps extra mark-ups off its prices. It suits anyone replacing a tired duvet before winter, people who want natural fillings like goose down or silk, and allergy-conscious sleepers looking at the washable ZeroMite and microfibre ranges.

Duvets come in single, double, king and super king, and in 4.5, 10.5 and 13.5 tog weights. There are also all-seasons sets, where a 4.5 and a 9 tog clip together for winter and come apart for summer. Bedding is offered in French-Belgian linen, cotton sateen and cotton percale, and fabric swatches are sold if you'd like to check a colour first.

The 100% Hungarian Goose Down Duvet is a good place to start: £128 for a single 4.5 tog, down from £160, with a cotton cambric casing and baffle-box stitching to keep the fill in place. If you're after a duvet that isn't down, the Pure Silk Duvet starts at £64 and comes with a three-year guarantee on its product page. For the bed itself, the Linen Bedding Set includes a sheet, pillowcases and a duvet cover, and is made in Portugal from French and Belgian flax.

Allergy-conscious sleepers can look at the ZeroMite® Hygienic Washable Pillow, which is £33.15 for a standard size, or £61.20 for a pair on the same page. Pairing new pillows with a Pure Cotton Mattress Protector, from £32 for a single, helps keep the bed underneath clean.

• Get to £60 if you can. A pillow protector or storage bag added to a smaller order can cost about the same as paying for delivery.
• Think about the all-seasons duvet before buying separate summer and winter duvets. One set covers the whole year.
