Burns Pet Nutrition was started in West Wales in 1993 by vet John Burns, and it's now owned by Assisi Pet Care. Its recipes are deliberately short, usually one main protein with brown rice or potato, and the original chicken and brown rice recipe is still made as it was in 1993. You'll find Burns in pet shops, but buying direct gives you the full range plus a subscription discount, which suits anyone who feeds the same food month after month.

What's worth a look

Here are six recipes from the Burns shop. Prices are for the smallest bag, at the time we looked.

The Original Chicken & Brown Rice is where the range began. It's made with brown rice, chicken, oats and peas, and bags start at £14.99. If your dog needs to avoid chicken, the Original Lamb & Brown Rice uses pasture-raised lamb at the same starting price.

The Sensitive range swaps in less common proteins. Sensitive Pork & Potato and Grain Free Duck & Potato both start at £15.49, and the duck recipe uses buckwheat instead of grain. For younger dogs, Puppy Original Chicken & Rice is recommended up to 12 months. There's also a wet food variety box with chicken, turkey, lamb and fish recipes if you like to mix things up at mealtimes.

Dry food comes in 2kg, 6kg and 12kg bags. The bigger bags work out cheaper per kilo and take you past the free delivery threshold in one go. Beyond the main recipes, there are senior, weight control and working dog ranges, plus guest brands on the shelf: YAKERS long-lasting chews and Hollings air-dried protein treats.

One thing that sets Burns apart is its free nutrition helpline. A team of nutritionists answers questions by phone, email or live chat during office hours. Pet owners, stockists and vets can all use it, and the team may ask about your dog's age, breed, weight and current diet before suggesting a recipe. The Burns site also has guides on how much to feed and how to switch foods gradually.

Current offers

We don't have any Burns codes in our list yet. On the site, Subscribe & Save takes 20% off your first subscription order and 10% off every delivery after that, with no fixed term. Delivery is free on mainland UK orders over £40.

How to save more

• Subscribe to the food your dog already eats. Deliveries can be set every 2 to 12 weeks, and you can skip, swap or cancel from your account.
• Buy a bigger bag or combine items to reach £40, which avoids the £3.50 to £5 delivery charge.
• Use the free nutrition helpline before changing recipes. Burns' nutritionists can suggest a food and send samples to try.
