KatKin: fresh cat food on subscription, from £1.99 a day

KatKin is a fresh cat food subscription from London. Instead of tins or kibble, it sends recipes made from human-quality meat that's gently cooked and then frozen, and each pouch is portioned to meet one cat's daily calorie needs. It suits cat owners who want to try fresh food without working out portions themselves, and who have a bit of freezer space.

You start by answering a few questions about your cat. KatKin then sets the portion size and a personalised price, from £1.99 a day, and sends a 14-day trial box. Plans are flexible: you can pause, change or cancel online or by phone. Deliveries cover England, Wales and most of mainland Scotland, but not Northern Ireland or the Highlands and Islands.

What's worth a look

KatKin's prices depend on your cat, so these are the starting prices it publishes.

Cluck is the chicken recipe KatKin suggests for most cats when they first switch, and it's made with chicken thigh, liver and heart. If your cat doesn't get on with chicken, Oink uses pork, which KatKin points out is less common in mainstream cat food. There are also beef, lamb, duck, turkey and fish recipes, freeze-dried Nibbles treats, and Sprinkles toppers you can add to a box.

KatKin also sells Scoop Planet, a clumping cat litter made from pea fibre and millet left over from the food industry. It's 100% biodegradable and comes on its own delivery plan.

If you'd rather not commit to a subscription straight away, some KatKin packs are sold in Pets at Home and Jollyes stores, including seven-day variety boxes, single 80g trays and Scoop Planet litter. That's a handy way to see whether your cat likes the food, or to top up if you run out between deliveries. Online, the food comes frozen in insulated boxes that keep it cold for up to 48 hours, and pouches keep in the fridge for a few days once defrosted.
