European Sleeper is a night train company that started in 2021, set up by two rail enthusiasts and funded by thousands of small investors who bought shares in the cooperative. Its idea is an old one brought back: get on a train in the evening, sleep, and wake up in another country's city centre, without an airport in sight.
It runs three overnight routes. One goes from Brussels to Prague, calling at Amsterdam and Berlin. Another links Paris and Berlin, and the newest runs between Brussels and Milan. For UK travellers the useful bit is that you can now book a Eurostar connection from London through Brussels on European Sleeper's own website, so the whole trip sits on one booking with a planned change in Brussels.
The trains are older carriages that have been updated rather than brand-new stock, and the company leans into that: the windows still open. You choose between Budget seats, Classic couchettes for four to six people, and Comfort Standard or Comfort Plus compartments with made-up beds for up to three. Classic and Comfort compartments can be booked as private, and there are women-only compartments. Fares are shown in euros, so your card will convert the price when you pay.
It suits couples and friends who like slow travel, solo travellers happy to share a compartment, and families who can take a private compartment for up to five. Dogs and cats can come too in a private compartment, for a €29.99 surcharge.

The London connection is the easiest place to start if you live in the UK: the night train fare starts at €49.99 in a shared Classic compartment, with the Eurostar leg costing extra. If you're planning more than a couple of trips, the European Sleeper Pass may work out cheaper, as you then pay a fixed reservation fee for each journey.
