JA Resorts & Hotels started in Dubai in 1981, when it opened two of the emirate's first resorts: the Jebel Ali Beach Hotel and the Hatta Fort Hotel in the Hajar Mountains. It is owned by the UAE's DUTCO Group and now has nine five-star properties in three countries. Six are in Dubai and Hatta, one is a private-island resort in the Maldives, and two are in Scotland.

The Scottish hotels make JA unusual among Gulf hotel brands, because you can stay with them without getting on a plane. JA Mar Hall is a nineteenth-century country estate on the River Clyde near Glasgow, and JA The Bruntsfield is a Victorian townhouse hotel in Edinburgh. The overseas resorts suit families after winter sun, golfers and couples looking for a long-haul treat.

What's worth a look

Here are six JA hotels, from Dubai beach resort to Edinburgh townhouse.

JA Beach Hotel is the flagship, a family resort that has been running for more than four decades. All 235 rooms and suites have a balcony or terrace, there's a kids club and a swim-up bar, and it offers all-inclusive stays. In the UK, JA Mar Hall sits in 240 acres about 10 minutes from Glasgow Airport, with the 18-hole Earl of Mar golf course, a spa with a heated pool and Sunday lunch in The Dining Room. It is currently in the middle of a £20 million refurbishment. JA Manafaru in the far north of the Maldives has overwater villas with private infinity pools.
