Kasai Grills: British-made Japanese konro charcoal grills and kit

Kasai Grills makes Japanese-style konro grills in Britain. A konro is a long, narrow charcoal barbecue that sits on a table or worktop, with mineral tiles inside that soak up and hold the heat. It is the grill behind yakitori and robata cooking, and Kasai's version is built in stainless steel and was refined with help from Michelin-starred chefs. Tommy Banks of The Black Swan at Oldstead is its brand ambassador, and the grills are used in restaurant kitchens around the UK.

The company behind it, Gastronomy Plus Ltd, is based near Lancaster. Kasai suits keen home cooks who want charcoal flavour without a big garden barbecue, people who love skewers and Japanese grilling, and chefs who need a compact grill for service. These are serious bits of kit with prices to match, so it is worth knowing the range before you choose a size.

What's worth a look

Here are six picks from the grills, accessories and fuel, with the UK prices shown on the site today.

The Nano is the place to start if you want something portable for a balcony or a couple of people. The Little Tommy Banks Edition is the same price as the standard Little grill but signed by the chef, so if you were choosing that size anyway it costs nothing extra. Add the 50/50 Plancha if you want to fry and grill at once: half of it is a flat griddle and half lets the flames through.

Current offers

There is no sale running on the Kasai site right now and no published discount code. The standing perk is delivery: orders over £85 go free to the UK mainland on a next working day service, and smaller orders cost £5.99. That means every grill qualifies, and so do most accessories once you add a bag of charcoal.

• Free next working day UK mainland delivery on orders over £85.
• 30 days to change your mind after delivery, longer than the legal 14 days.
• A one-year warranty on the grills.

How to save more

• Bundle fuel with your grill. Sumi Bincho charcoal is £28 for 10kg and the wood wool firelighters are £15, so adding them to a grill order avoids a separate £5.99 delivery charge later.
• Pick the right size first. Accessories such as planchas and skewer racks are made for specific grill sizes, so check the size selector before you buy to avoid an exchange, which costs a flat £10.
• Look at the Edition bundles. The Solid Plancha, 50/50 Plancha and Searing Editions pair a grill with its matching accessory, which saves picking parts separately.
