Magic Hotel Group is a family-run chain from Benidorm. Its story goes back to the early 1980s, when founder Francisco García Martínez bought the company behind the Hotel Fenicia, and the García Cuenca family still runs it. Today it has more than 20 hotels and apartments across Benidorm, the wider Costa Blanca, Gandía and Oropesa del Mar in Castellón, and it's best known for themed family resorts sold on an 'Ultra All Inclusive' basis.

It suits families who want the kids entertained from breakfast to bedtime, but there are adults-leaning seafront hotels too, plus pet-friendly rooms in several properties. Prices on magichotelgroup.com are in euros, and booking direct brings a few extras you won't always get elsewhere.

What's worth a look

These six hotels show the range, from water parks and animals to quiet spa breaks.

Magic Pirates Island Resort bills itself as the world's first pirate-themed resort, with themed lodges, three large pools and free unlimited access to the Terra Natura zoo and Aqua Natura water park next door. For something calmer, Hotel Villa del Mar sits right on Benidorm's Poniente beach with a spa and Mediterranean food.

If you're bringing a dog, several Magic hotels take pets for a small daily supplement. Villa Luz, Villa España, Villa Venecia and Magic Atrium Plaza accept pets up to 7kg, while Magic Robin Hood, Cristal Park and Magic Tropical Splash have no weight limit; you need to book the pet-friendly rate or room. Check-in at the big themed resorts is from 5pm, but you can use the facilities and leave your bags as soon as you arrive.

Joining the free Magic Amigos club takes up to 4% off your bookings.

How to save more

• Sign up to Magic Amigos before booking. It costs nothing, and members also get 5% off spa treatments and themed restaurants, rising after 14 and 21 nights.
• Plan for five nights if you can. That's the point where the airport transfer becomes free, which saves a taxi each way from Alicante.
• Think about the Safe Rate. It adds up to 10% to the price, but standard bookings start charging 25% of the total a week before arrival if you cancel.
