MAGIX is a Berlin software company that makes programs for editing video, producing music and building photo slideshows. Its first product, Music Maker, came out in 1994, and the range now includes Video deluxe, Video Pro X and Photostory deluxe, along with Producer Planet, an online store for sound packs, clips and plug-ins. The UK site lists prices in pounds, and most programs are sold as a one-off licence in two or three editions.

It suits home users who want to edit holiday videos, make slideshows from family photos or try making music with loops, as well as hobbyists stepping up to more detailed editing with Video Pro X. Software arrives as a download straight after purchase, and you can add a backup disc if you want a physical copy. Many titles have free trial versions, so you can check a program works on your computer before you pay.

What's worth a look

• Video deluxe 2027 is the main video editor for home users, with templates, effects and AI voiceover and subtitle tools. The Plus edition is currently £44.99, Premium £54.99 and Ultimate £99.99 for a new licence.
• Music Maker 2026 lets you build tracks by dragging and dropping loops and virtual instruments. The Premium edition is currently £44.99, Ultimate £99.99 and Unlimited, which adds a year of the Loops Unlimited subscription, £119.99.
• Photostory deluxe 2027 turns photos and clips into slideshows with music and transitions. It is currently £39.99, or £79.99 for the Plus edition, which adds Photo Manager Deluxe and extra title tools.
• Video Pro X18 is aimed at more experienced editors. The Classic edition is currently £159.99 and Ultimate £199.99.
• Video Saver is a kit for transferring old video tapes to your computer, bundled with editing software.

How to save more

• Download the free trial first. Photostory deluxe, for example, has a 30-day trial, which is long enough to finish a small project and decide whether you need the higher edition.
• Compare editions carefully. Higher editions mainly add bundled plug-ins, sound packs and stock content, so the entry edition may be enough for occasional use.
• If you're a student or teacher, check the education shop before paying the standard price. Verification takes a few days, but you can use the trial in the meantime.
