Mercury Holidays has been selling holidays since 1980, when it started out as a small company specialising in Malta. Today it trades from Sevenoaks in Kent as one of the bigger independent UK tour operators, with escorted tours, beach holidays, river and ocean cruises, solo tours and private trips. It is a member of ABTA and its holidays are ATOL protected.
It suits two kinds of traveller in particular. If you like someone else to handle the planning, its escorted tours cover places such as Sri Lanka, Japan, China, India, Peru and Vietnam, with flights, hotels, many meals and a guide included. If you want a long, lazy stay somewhere warm, Mercury is known for free-week deals: book two weeks and get the third free, or stay 14 nights and pay for seven, at selected hotels. Solo travellers can filter for holidays with no single supplement.
Prices are fixed once you book, with no surcharges, and many holidays fly from regional UK airports rather than just the London ones. Stays can run from three nights to a month or longer, and the company provides in-resort representatives around the clock. You can book online or by phone, and there's a free printed brochure if you like to browse on paper.
Paying is flexible too. Mercury charges no card or admin fees, accepts PayPal Pay in 3, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and lets you settle the balance by bank transfer if you book more than 12 weeks ahead.

The Grand Tour of Sri Lanka is the big one: 17 days covering the east coast beaches, the Cultural Triangle, the tea country and wildlife parks at Udawalawe and Yala, with 44 meals included. If you'd rather sit still, the three-week Cyprus deal at Paphos Gardens works out at a very low cost per night.

How to save more
- Compare the long-stay offers: a free third week can make three weeks cost little more than two.
- Mercury's price promise says it will refund the difference if you find the same holiday cheaper, so it's worth checking.
- Book more than 12 weeks ahead and you can pay a deposit now and the balance later, with no card fees. PayPal Pay in 3 is also available.
