Slate House: personalised Welsh slate gifts made in South Wales

Slate House is a small Welsh business that turns slate from the quarries of North Wales into homeware, gifts, house signs and memorials. Everything is cut and personalised at its workshop in Resolven, near Neath, using laser engraving, sandblasting and, more recently, full-colour UV printing. The business started in 2007 with one laser engraver in a spare bedroom and traded as Valley Mill before taking the Slate House name.

It suits anyone looking for a personal gift with a Welsh connection, a hard-wearing sign for the front of the house, or a lasting memorial for a person or pet. Plenty of items can be personalised with names, dates or a photo, and there's a good spread of smaller pieces for stocking fillers too.

What's worth a look

• Slate cheese boards: the rectangle plain Welsh slate cheese board is currently £12.95, and the round board deep-engraved with "Caws" (Welsh for cheese) is currently £29.95. The boards are finished with a food-safe oil.
• Welsh slate wall clocks: designs include Welsh numbers, Roman numerals, a dragon and Calon Lân, each currently £49.95.
• Slate house signs: 20mm-thick signs cut to size, such as the 150mm x 300mm sign, currently £54.95. Signs take around 10 days to make.
• Slate Christmas decorations: small hanging pieces like the Nadolig Llawen tree are currently £7.95, and a personalised decoration is currently £9.95.
• Photo printing on slate: the newer UV-printed range includes a round photo coaster, currently £8.95.

Slate House also makes pet memorials, from a 200 x 150mm flat plaque at £70 upwards, plus trophies and medals for sports clubs. Prices can change, so check the product page before you order.
