Tesco: getting the most from Clubcard Prices, Delivery Saver and Clubcard Plus

Tesco hardly needs an introduction. It started as Jack Cohen's market stall in Hackney in 1919 and is now the UK's biggest grocer, with everything from Express corner shops to big Extra stores, plus home delivery, Click+Collect and the rapid Whoosh service in some areas. What's changed over the years is how much of the saving now runs through Clubcard. If you shop at Tesco even occasionally, it's worth understanding how the different schemes fit together, because the shelf price and the price a Clubcard member pays are often quite different.

This guide suits anyone doing a regular family shop, people who order online most weeks, and anyone trying to work out whether a paid subscription such as Delivery Saver or Clubcard Plus would pay for itself.

What's worth a look

Tesco groups its current member deals into Clubcard Prices lists by aisle, which are handy for planning a shop around what's cheaper this week.

When we looked, the top picks included a 24-can pack of Pepsi Max at £8 instead of £11.75. The fresh list had salmon and other selected meat and fish in an any 3 for £12 Clubcard Price deal, while the frozen list featured a Tesco Finest meal deal of a main, side and dessert for £8. Each offer shows the dates it applies to, so check the delivery window before you build a basket around one.

Current offers

We don't have any voucher codes for Tesco, and it doesn't run an affiliate programme with us. These are the savings on its own site right now:

• Clubcard Plus first month free for new subscribers (anyone who hasn't subscribed in the last six months). It then costs £7.99 a month and gives you 10% off two in-store grocery shops a month, plus 10% off F&F and selected Tesco brands in store. You can cancel any time.
• Delivery Saver from £2.49 a month on the six-month Click+Collect plan. Anytime plans cost £7.99 a month over six months or £6.99 a month over 12 months, and Off Peak plans cost £4.99 or £3.99. If a plan doesn't save you money, Tesco gives you coupons for the difference.
• Clubcard Prices for members on lines in every aisle, each showing the dates it applies to.

Standard delivery costs £3 to £7 depending on where you live, Flexi saver slots cost £1.50 to £4, and Click+Collect costs £0 to £2. All the details are in the delivery prices FAQ.

How to save more

• Open the app on a Wednesday. That's when new Your Clubcard Prices arrive, which are personalised to what you usually buy and last seven days, and you need to unlock them before you shop online.
• Watch the minimum basket. Delivery orders under £50 and Click+Collect orders under £25 pick up a £5 charge, so add a cupboard staple rather than paying it.
• Turn points into vouchers and spend them wisely. Every 150 points becomes £1.50, and you can spend vouchers on your shopping or with Tesco's Reward Partners.
