About Bookshop.org
Bookshop.org is an online bookshop set up as an alternative to the big online retailers, with a simple promise: a share of every sale goes to independent bookshops. It started in the United States in January 2020, founded by Andy Hunter, and opened its UK site in November 2020 in partnership with the book wholesaler Gardners. The UK business is run by Bookshoppe Ltd from London.
You shop on one website, but you can pick a local independent bookshop to support, or buy through a shop's own Bookshop.org page so that shop gets about 30% of the cover price. Sales that don't come through a particular shop still add to a pool shared between independents. Bookshop.org's own worked example for a £15 book shows the shop getting £4.50 and Bookshop.org keeping 60p.
Alongside new books it sells ebooks, digital gift cards valid for two years, and accepts National Book Tokens online. Its Bookloop trade-in service lets you send in second-hand books for store credit, and in 2026 it added an audiobook subscription for UK customers. Orders go by Royal Mail tracked post, with free second-class delivery over £25. Bookshop, Inc. is a certified B Corporation.
