About ISSA
ISSA, the International Sports Sciences Association, is an online fitness education company based in Phoenix, Arizona. It was founded in 1988 by Sal Arria and Frederick Hatfield and was bought by the private equity firm Tailwind Capital in 2021. ISSA says it has more than a million students and is used in 176 countries.
Its best-known course is the Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) programme, which can be taken with an open-book ISSA exam or a proctored NCCPT exam accredited by the US body NCCA. Alongside it are specialist courses such as Nutrition Coach, Strength and Conditioning, Corrective Exercise, Yoga 200 and The Business of Personal Training, plus continuing education credits. Bundles such as Fitness Coach, Elite Trainer and Master Trainer combine several courses. Everything is studied online at your own pace, with digital textbooks, videos, quizzes and student support.
Prices are in US dollars, with interest-free 6- and 12-month payment plans or a lower price for paying in full. ISSA's qualifications are US-based, and its job guarantee and military benefits apply to US residents only. UK learners should check whether a UK employer or insurer will accept the qualification before buying.
