About ParentShield
ParentShield is a mobile network built for children's first phones, run by Engine Mobile Ltd from Pioneer House in Stenson, on the southern edge of Derby. Its chief executive, Graham Tyers, says the team started working on the idea in 2015 and launched it as a mobile network in its own right in 2018. Rather than selling handsets, it sends out a SIM card or eSIM that goes into any unlocked phone, so a cheap basic handset or a hand-me-down smartphone both work.
The controls sit on the network rather than in an app on the phone. Every call and text is recorded to an online portal parents can check, anonymous calls are blocked, numbers can be blocked or allow-listed instantly, and there are time restrictions, word alerts and an AI summary of each call with a risk score. Two 'Home Numbers' can always be called or texted free, even when the allowance has run out, and premium-rate numbers, shortcodes and other chargeable extras are switched off, so the bill can't go over the plan price.
Plans are rolling monthly contracts. Safe Stage SIMs run on EE, Roam Stage SIMs switch between UK networks for the best signal, and Pro Stage plans are aimed at children's homes, fostering providers and schools. ParentShield also offers versions for older people who need protection from scam calls.
