About Help A Squaddie

Help A Squaddie is a small charity based at St John's Church in Heath Hayes, Cannock, that supports ex-service men and women and their families in Staffordshire and South Derbyshire who are struggling through no fault of their own. Its main work is housing: it gives homeless veterans a stable home at The Russell Aston Home for Veterans, a four-bedroom house in Staffordshire, along with the support and advice they need to get back on their feet. It also runs a veterans' food bank and a monthly veterans' breakfast.

It was registered with the Charity Commission as a charitable incorporated organisation on 18 March 2019, and that August the register records funds received from an earlier charity, Save Our Soldier. Its first aim was to rehouse homeless ex-service personnel, but it soon found that homelessness could often be prevented if problems were dealt with sooner, so it now works to get struggling veterans help when and where they need it, working with other agencies and organisations. It is a member of the Association of ex-Service Drop-In Centres (ASDIC).

Veterans can apply for help themselves or be referred by an agency, with proof of service. Its support covers finding and keeping a home, debt, forms and phone calls, training and work, mental and physical health, alcohol and drug problems, social isolation and access to its food bank. The Charity Commission register lists 5 trustees, none of them paid, and 12 volunteers, with income of £177,644 for the year to 30 September 2025.

Every time a supporter shops online through Voucher Magpie with Help A Squaddie chosen, we donate 50% of the commission the shop pays us to Help A Squaddie, at no extra cost to the shopper.
