December starts on a Tuesday this year, so there's a month left to buy an advent calendar, and the price gap between them is huge. When we checked on 1 November, the cheapest chocolate calendar we found cost 14p a door and the dearest toy calendar more than £1.15 a door. We compared chocolate and toy calendars at Morrisons, John Lewis and Cadbury Gifts Direct. Beauty calendars aren't included.

Our per-door figures assume 24 doors, which is standard for these calendars. Check the box before you buy, as a few have extra doors or bigger treats.

At a glance

  • Cheapest per door: Cadbury Dairy Milk 90g at Cadbury Gifts Direct, £3.28, about 14p a door.
  • Best supermarket deal: Morrisons More Card prices take £2 off several Cadbury calendars, bringing them to £5.50.
  • Cheapest LEGO: LEGO City 2026 (60510) at £17.98 at John Lewis, about 75p a door.
  • Most expensive we found: Schleich Horse Club at £27.99 (£1.17 a door) and Hotel Chocolat The Everything at £25.50 (£1.06 a door).

Chocolate calendars

Morrisons lists most of the big brands, and members of its free More Card scheme get a lower price on many of them. These prices were on the Morrisons website:

  • KitKat 85g: £3.50, about 15p a door.
  • Kinder Chocolate 24 Minis 144g: £5, or £4.50 with More Card, about 19p a door.
  • Cadbury Dairy Milk 258g, Heroes 230g and Dairy Milk Biscoff 236g: £7.50 each, or £5.50 with More Card, about 23p a door.
  • Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate Chunk 348g: £10, or £7.75 with More Card.
  • Lindt Lindor Milk 235g: £12, or £10 with More Card, about 42p a door.
  • Toblerone 204g: £12, or £10 with More Card.
  • Lindt Festive Selection 289g: £17, or £14 with More Card, about 58p a door.

Cadbury Gifts Direct sells the classic 90g Dairy Milk calendar for £3.28, or two for £6, and it runs a weekend offer of 10% off advent calendars with the code OPENDOOR. It also has a 348g Dairy Milk Adult calendar at £10 and Toblerone at £12.

Hotel Chocolat calendars cost more. At John Lewis, the 125g Milk, Dark and Caramel-Milk calendars were £11.90 each, down from £14, about 50p a door. The Everything calendar (210g) was £25.50, down from £30.

Price per door isn't the whole story. The Morrisons Dairy Milk calendar holds 258g of chocolate against 90g in the classic version, so it gives you nearly three times as much chocolate for well under three times the price.

LEGO and toy calendars

John Lewis had all four of this year's main LEGO calendars in its listings:

  • LEGO City 2026 (60510): £17.98, about 75p a door.
  • LEGO Friends 2026 (42698): £17.99, with 211 pieces.
  • LEGO Star Wars 2026 (75456): £22.99, about 96p a door.
  • LEGO Marvel (76340) and Disney Princess 2026 (43298): £23.98 each.

Other toy calendars at John Lewis included Mattel UNO at £13.49 (down from £17.99), Gabby's Dollhouse at £17.98, Barbie at £19.59 (down from £27.99), Bluey Fuzzies at £19.99, Squishmallows at £25.48, BRIO World at £27.99 (down from £34.99), Schleich Horse Club at £27.99 (down from £34.99) and Plus-Plus at £29.99.

We couldn't load LEGO's own website to check its prices, so compare it with the figures above before you buy from LEGO direct.

Worked example: two children, two calendars

A family buying one LEGO and one chocolate calendar for two children could pay:

  • LEGO Star Wars and Lindt Festive Selection (full price): £22.99 + £17 = £39.99.
  • LEGO City and a Morrisons Cadbury Dairy Milk 258g with More Card: £17.98 + £5.50 = £23.48.
  • Two classic Dairy Milk 90g calendars from Cadbury Gifts Direct: £6 for the pair, or £5.40 with OPENDOOR at the weekend, before delivery.

The middle option saves £16.51 on the first while still giving each child a calendar they'd want.

What to do now

  1. Work out the price per door, and for chocolate, the price per 100g.
  2. Sign up to the free Morrisons More Card before buying there, as the card price is up to £3 lower.
  3. Check delivery costs before ordering a single cheap calendar online.
  4. Compare LEGO prices at John Lewis, LEGO and other toy shops, as they often differ.
  5. Buy by the end of November so the calendar is ready for 1 December.

Questions

Will calendars be cheaper on Black Friday?

We can't say. Some toy calendars already show reductions, and Black Friday is 27 November, but there's no guarantee a particular calendar will be cheaper or still in stock.

Is a bigger chocolate calendar better value?

Often, per gram. Compare the shelf price per kg: at Morrisons, the 258g Dairy Milk works out at £29.07 a kg at full price, while the 85g KitKat is £41.18 a kg.

Can I return an advent calendar?

Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations you can usually cancel an online order within 14 days of delivery, though there are exceptions, such as for perishable goods. Check each shop's returns policy.
