About RNLI

The RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) is a charity that saves lives at sea and on inland and flood waters. It was founded in 1824 by Sir William Hillary.

Its volunteer crews run a lifeboat search and rescue service around the coasts of the UK and Ireland at any hour of the day. Its lifeguards patrol beaches in the summer, and its safety teams teach people how to stay safe near water. Overseas, it works with partners on drowning prevention and flood rescue, including in Bangladesh.
