Mamas & Papas vs John Lewis, Boots and Smyths: free expert help and a 14-day price match
Free buying and car seat appointments, a price match that refunds the difference up to 14 days after you buy. Here's how it compares.

Shopping at Mamas & Papas? See all current Mamas & Papas discount codes and deals, checked regularly.
Find the same pushchair cheaper at a high-street rival within 14 days of buying it from Mamas & Papas, and it will refund the difference. Add free one-to-one advice on what to buy and free car seat fitting help, and you have the main reasons parents shop there for the big-ticket items. The business was started in 1981 by new parents David and Luisa Scacchetti, who couldn't find baby products they liked and began importing Italian-designed prams. It's still based in Huddersfield and now has more than 60 stores around the UK.
We've compared it with three names parents often check for baby products, John Lewis, Boots and Smyths Toys, using each retailer's own website.
A baby specialist, not a department store
The biggest difference is focus. Mamas & Papas designs its own pushchairs, including the Ocarro 2, Vardo, Flip XT³ and Libro, along with its own nursery furniture, baby clothing, bedding and toys. It also stocks well-known brands such as Bugaboo, Cybex, Maxi-Cosi, Joie, Nuna, iCandy, Egg and Joolz. Its app says the full range runs to more than 2,000 baby products.
That focus shows in the bundles. Travel systems come as complete kits with a car seat, base and accessories, and cots can be bought with a matching mattress. The Ocarro 2 9-piece bundle with a Cybex Cloud T car seat and base is currently £1,299, and the Flip XT³ 4-piece pushchair bundle is reduced to £368 from £736.
For the others, baby is one part of a bigger shop. John Lewis is a department store, Boots focuses on baby toiletries and feeding essentials, and Smyths Toys is mainly about toys, games and consoles.
Expert help, free of charge
For first-time parents, this may be the most useful part of the service. Free one-to-one Buying for Baby appointments pair you with an adviser who helps you work out what you actually need. Free car seat appointments help you find and fit the right seat, whether it's your baby's first or the next stage up.
Later on, you can book a Pushchair Valet & Service, which includes a deep clean and a 20-point safety check, and selected stores sell professionally restored pre-loved Mamas & Papas pushchairs.
Price match, even after you've bought
Mamas & Papas will match a lower price on the same product from a qualifying competitor, on its own brand and on third-party brands such as Joie, Bugaboo, Cybex and Tommee Tippee. If you've already bought, it refunds the difference within 14 days of purchase. The product must be identical and in stock, and the rival must trade on the UK or Irish high street.
Here's how the others handle price:
- John Lewis: its Price Promise matches lower prices from selected retailers, and refunds the difference if John Lewis lowers its own price within 7 days.
- Smyths Toys: its Price Promise charges you the lower price if an item's price changes before dispatch or collection.
- Boots: doesn't advertise a price match, relying on Advantage Card points and member prices instead.
Delivery and collection
- Standard delivery: 3-5 days, free on orders over £60 or £4.95 below that. Furniture and large items are excluded.
- Next day: £6.95 if you order before 7pm, seven days a week.
- Click and collect: free from a store, usually within 3-5 days.
- Two-man delivery: large items such as furniture and chairs arrive on a day you choose, for £20 on a weekday or £30 at the weekend, with six days' notice.
For comparison, John Lewis delivers free on orders of £50 or more (£4.50 below) and charges £19.95 for larger items. Boots delivers free when you spend £25 (£3.95 below) and charges £5.95 for next day. Smyths Toys delivers free on orders over £20, excluding large bulky items.
Returns
You get 30 calendar days to return unused items in their original packaging with tags attached, for a refund or an exchange, and you can take them to any store even if you bought online. Personalised items, opened mattresses and clearance items marked with a red dot are excluded.
Smyths Toys offers 28 days, but says nursery items can't be returned unless they're faulty. That matters if you're unsure about a pushchair or a bedside crib.
Where the others have the edge
To be fair to the competition, Mamas & Papas isn't the right choice for everything:
- Free postal returns: John Lewis lets you post small items back for free. Mamas & Papas returns are free in store, but you pay the postage if you send them back.
- Longer Christmas returns: John Lewis gifts bought from 1 October to 24 December 2026 can be returned until 23 January 2027.
- Lower free-delivery thresholds: Boots (£25) and Smyths Toys (£20) set the bar much lower than £60, which helps with smaller top-up orders.
- Loyalty points: Boots gives 3 Advantage Card points per £1 on most purchases. Mamas & Papas doesn't run a points scheme.
- Fast collection: Smyths Toys Click & Collect can be ready within two hours, against 3-5 days at Mamas & Papas.
Who Mamas & Papas suits best
Mamas & Papas is a strong pick if you're buying the big things for a first baby and want help choosing them. The free appointments, the price match and the bundles work best when you're buying a pushchair, car seat and nursery furniture together. For nappies, wipes and toiletries, Boots, with its £25 free-delivery threshold and Advantage Card points, is the more convenient top-up shop.
Your questions answered
Is Mamas & Papas a British company?
Yes. It was founded in 1981 by David and Luisa Scacchetti and is still based in Huddersfield.
Can I return an online order to a Mamas & Papas store?
Yes, unused items can go back to any store within 30 days. Furniture is the exception: call Customer Care on 0345 268 2000 to arrange a return, which usually costs £40.
Will Mamas & Papas match a price I've seen online?
