Starbucks Rewards UK changed its redemption thresholds in September 2026, so older charts can now give the wrong answer about how many Stars you need for a free drink. The most useful approach is to compare the points needed for the item you actually want and to check your Gold eligibility.

How fast do you earn Stars?

The official UK programme says members can earn ten Stars per £1 spent on eligible purchases at participating stores when paying or scanning in an accepted way. That rate is separate from occasional bonus-Star promotions. You need to identify your account correctly, so scanning the app or using the registered card is important.

What do Stars buy now?

  • 150 Stars: selected filter coffee, Americano or hot teas.
  • 350 Stars: selected bakery items.
  • 600 Stars: an eligible handcrafted beverage of your choice.
  • 1,150 Stars: selected merchandise.
  • 2,500 Stars: the threshold for Gold Level, with extra benefits including a birthday drink, subject to terms.

These thresholds are from Starbucks’ published changes effective 3 September 2026. Participating stores and item exclusions apply. The app provides the definitive options for your specific reward and location.

What that means in spend

At the standard rate of ten Stars per £1, 150 Stars correspond to £15 of qualifying spend, 350 to £35 and 600 to £60. That is an earning illustration, not the cash value of a drink or a reason to spend more. Bonus Stars and promotional activity can change the actual number of purchases needed.

Birthday rewards and expiry

The birthday drink is a Gold-level benefit, not a universal freebie simply for downloading the app. Starbucks says birthday details need to be added to the account. Stars generally have individual expiry dates, so check your balance and upcoming expiry before deciding whether to save them for a larger reward.

Before you buy

  • Confirm the store participates in Starbucks Rewards.
  • Scan the app or use a qualifying payment method to earn Stars.
  • Compare the cash price of your desired item with the opportunity cost of redeeming Stars.
  • Look for current app offers rather than assuming an NHS or student discount is nationally available.
