DutchGrown is run by brothers Ben and Pete, whose family has been growing and exporting flower bulbs from the Netherlands since 1882. Ben deals with the growers and Pete runs the website. The company also exhibits at the Keukenhof flower park, which is where much of the photography on the site comes from. UK orders are sent from London, so you won't face customs charges on bulbs bought for your garden.

It's a shop for gardeners who plan ahead. Autumn is the season for spring-flowering bulbs, and DutchGrown sends them out from early October through November, so they arrive in time for planting. There are more than 160 tulips to choose from, along with daffodils, alliums, crocus, hyacinths, anemones and ready-made collections. Bulbs come in packs, and bigger packs work out cheaper per bulb.

If you want lots of colour without choosing varieties one by one, the Eternal Spring Tulip Mix combines 50 different tulips (singles, doubles, parrots and fringed, flowering early, mid and late) for £40 per 50 bulbs, down from £44.50. For height in a border, the Allium Globemaster grows to about 90cm, with silvery purple heads up to 25cm across. It's £8.85 for one bulb, and the 10-pack is marked 'Save 23%'.

Thinking further ahead? The homepage says pre-sale is open for dahlias. Spring-planted bulbs and plants, including dahlias, calla lilies, gladioli and perennials such as echinacea, are dispatched from mid-March to June, and pre-orders go out first.
