Falkensteiner Hotels & Residences began as a guest house in South Tyrol in 1957 and is still run by the Falkensteiner family with partner Otmar Michaeler, from a head office in Vienna. Its hotels, apartments and campsites are in Austria, Italy, Croatia, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, with rates in euros. There are no UK hotels, so you'd fly or drive to the Alps, the Adriatic or a city such as Prague.

It suits a lot of different trips. There are family resorts with big kids' clubs, quieter adults-friendly spa hotels, ski-in apartments and stylish city hotels. Many have an Acquapura spa, and booking direct brings extras you won't get through other sites.

What's worth a look

Here are six Falkensteiner properties that show the range.

For a grown-up break, the Falkensteiner Schlosshotel Velden sits on the shore of Lake Wörthersee in Carinthia. It's a 5-star member of The Leading Hotels of the World, mixing a historic castle with modern architecture, and guests can use the 3,600m² Acquapura Lake SPA free. Families heading to the Adriatic should look at the Club Funimation Borik in Zadar, an all-inclusive beach hotel with a water world, Falky Land kids' club and sports programme.

Skiers might prefer the Residences Triforêt in Upper Austria, at 1,410m by the Hinterstoder-Höss mid-station, with 41 apartments, 20 chalets and an infinity pool. For a city break, the Falkensteiner Hotel Prague is two blocks from Wenceslas Square and a couple of minutes' walk from the main railway station.

Families who want everything in one place could look at the Falkensteiner Family Resort Lido in South Tyrol, which takes families only. Children are included in the room rate (how many depends on the room), meals are full board, and the roof has a Sky Adventure Park with a year-round ski slope and ski lessons, a trampoline area and, from summer 2026, a pickleball court. There's also an indoor water slide and a spa for adults only.

• Book direct. Falkensteiner says it will match a lower price for the same room type, so there's no reason to go through another site.
• Add 'Easy Protect' when you book if you're worried about illness. It refunds you if you can't travel, or have to leave early, for a covered reason.
