GardenDecoration.co.uk: made-to-measure outdoor canvases for dull garden walls

If the view from your patio is a bare fence, a concrete wall or the side of a shed, GardenDecoration.co.uk offers a quick fix: a large printed outdoor canvas. The business was set up in 2004 by Dtp Studio Schuurman, a Dutch company in Harderwijk that says it was the first in Europe to make these garden posters, and it has since appeared on several Dutch home and garden TV shows.

You can choose a picture from its photo library, which is organised into themes such as beaches, lavender and sunflower fields, waterfalls, Buddha statues, forests, mountains, animals and a trompe-l'oeil folder of doors and windows that make a wall look like it opens onto another garden. Or you can upload your own photo, whether that's a family picture or a view from last summer's holiday.

Every canvas is made to the centimetre at the size you enter, up to 10 metres wide. You then choose how it's hung: canvas only, stainless steel eyelets, tulle, a wooden or scaffolding-wood frame, a rigid garden board, or self-adhesive versions including a one-way window film. The canvas is UV and water resistant and washable, with a 3-year colour warranty and a 5-year warranty on the hanging systems. Prices are in pounds including VAT, with delivery added at checkout.

Ordering happens on each photo's page. You pick the hanging system, type in the width and height in centimetres or inches, and the price updates straight away. You can also switch the image to black and white or flip it. If your size doesn't match the shape of the photo, the team will adjust the image in Photoshop and email you a preview to approve before printing. Questions go to the UK phone line on 0330 808 8469.

The cheapest way in is canvas only: Serene Waterfall Amidst Vibrant Flora came to £53.62 at 100 x 70 cm. Doubling the size to 200 x 100 cm, as with Lavender Fields Under Blue Skies, was £116.40. Frames and boards add noticeably to the cost, so it's worth trying a few options in the calculator.

How to save more

• Choose canvas only if you can make your own fixing: it's the cheapest option, and eyelets added only about £26 at 200 x 100 cm.
• Measure carefully. Canvases are made to measure, so they can't be returned unless they're faulty, and any fault has to be reported within 7 days.
• If you can't find the right image, ask: the company says it has many photos not yet on the website.
