PicStop: telescopes, smart scopes and binoculars for winter nights

PicStop has been selling online since 2000. It began with memory cards and camera accessories and has grown into a specialist in telescopes, binoculars and outdoor kit too. The head office is on the Isle of Man and orders ship from a warehouse in Birmingham. It's an authorised reseller for brands including Celestron, SanDisk, Vanguard and Browning, so you get the full manufacturer warranty.

It's a good fit for beginner stargazers, birdwatchers and wildlife fans, and for anyone shopping for a telescope as a Christmas present. Long, dark winter evenings are the best time of year to get started with astronomy.

What's worth a look

Here are six picks from PicStop's best sellers, from a first telescope to app-controlled smart scopes.

For a first telescope, the Celestron Inspire 100AZ is £280.99, down from £335.99. Celestron describes it as the largest-aperture model in its Inspire range, with a short tube that gives a wide view of the Moon, planets and bright star clusters. The Sky Watcher Heritage 130P tabletop telescope is a cheaper alternative at £213.99.

Smart telescopes do the hard work for you: they line themselves up with the night sky and show live images on your phone. The ZWO Seestar S30 Pro is £649 with a tripod, and the DwarfLab DWARF 3 is £459.

Not into astronomy? The Celestron Outland X 8x32 Birder Kit is a lighter-weight pair of binoculars for birdwatching at £82.99, and the Browning Spec Ops Elite HP5 Ultra trail camera, £209.99, is the kind of thing you strap to a tree to see which animals visit the garden at night. PicStop also sells a big range of SanDisk, Kingston and Lexar memory cards, which make a sensible add-on for a trail camera or smart telescope. Live chat and phone support run from 10am to 5pm on weekdays, and the team can help you choose if you're not sure which telescope suits you.
