Grubby is a plant-based recipe box from a small British company based in Lichfield. Its pitch is that vegan food doesn't have to feel like a sacrifice, and it's aimed at anyone who wants to eat more plants. Grubby says most of its customers aren't vegan at all. Each meal kit recipe comes in its own paper bag with pre-portioned ingredients, so all you need at home is oil, salt and pepper.

It suits busy couples and families who like cooking but are tired of planning, and people living alone who'd rather heat something up. There are about 30 recipes a week, most ready in 15 to 30 minutes, and a separate range of frozen ready meals for one. Grubby is a certified B Corp. The meal kits get cheaper per serving as the box grows. A two-recipe box for two is £29.98, about £7.50 a serving, while a five-recipe family box is £94.90, or £4.75 a serving. This week's menu includes a rich one-pot Moroccan lentil and chickpea stew and a mushroom lasagne, alongside pies, curries, tacos and stir-fries. Ready meals such as the tofu saag curry are £7.25 each and go from freezer to fork in under eight minutes.

Extras can ride along in any box. There are Cake Or Death sea salt brownies (£6.50 for two), tofu, plant-based sausages, oat milk powder and the hardback Grubby Recipes cookbook (£20), which collects more than 60 of its best-rated dishes. If you're buying for someone else, Grubby also sells digital gift cards that can go towards meal kits, ready meals or extras, and leftover credit carries over to later orders. Subscriptions are weekly or fortnightly, and you can skip, pause for up to four weeks or cancel online with no phone calls.

How to save more

• Order bigger boxes if you can use them. Five recipes for four people costs much less per serving than two recipes for two.
• Ready meals are £7.25 each up to six, then the price per meal drops gradually, reaching £6.40 when you order 16.
• Pick your recipes before the cut-off (11:59pm three days before delivery). Skip or pause weeks in your account rather than letting a box go out you don't need.
