Hertz is one of the biggest names in car hire. It started in the US in 1918, and its UK site covers rentals from UK branches as well as abroad, with Hertz quoting 11,000 locations worldwide. In the UK you'll find it at airports and in cities including London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow and Belfast.

It suits holidaymakers picking up a car at the airport, people moving house who need a van for a day, and businesses that want a car for a month without a lease. To book, you need a driving licence, a card in the main driver's name and a second form of ID. The minimum age in the UK is 21, and drivers under 25 may pay extra.

What's worth a look

Here are six Hertz services worth knowing about.

Hertz van hire covers everything from moving house to business jobs, from branches nationwide, and Hertz 24/7 lets members hire a van by the hour through an app. For longer needs, Hertz 28 Days+ is aimed at businesses: the price includes 2,500 miles every 28 days, maintenance, 24/7 breakdown cover and a free additional driver, and the car can be delivered to your home or office.

Hertz One is worth checking if you're heading one way across the country. When Hertz needs to move vehicles, it rents them for £1 a day for up to two days. Journeys come and go, though, and none were listed when we looked.

The fleet runs from compact cars to SUVs, premium cars, vans and electric models, though what you can get depends on the branch. Hertz has an electric car hire page for anyone who wants to try an EV, and it's worth reading before you go. Gold+ members earn points on time and mileage charges, which count towards free rental days.

How to save more

• Join Gold+ before booking. The discount applies to the base rate (not taxes or extras), and after your first rental you can skip the counter at selected locations.
• Choose Pay Later if your plans might change. It can be cancelled free before pick-up, while prepaid bookings cancelled late lose a £30 fee.
• Returning somewhere else? Set the drop-off location when you book, as one-way rentals need agreeing in advance and may carry a fee.
