KitchenKnives.co.uk has one of the longer back stories in UK retail. It traces its roots to 1899, when Peter Maturi opened a shop in Leeds and sharpened knives and scissors for hotels, restaurants and tailors from a bicycle and barrow. The family business became a Leeds institution, and since 2015 the brand has been run by Gastronomy Plus Ltd from Claughton, near Lancaster.

It suits keen home cooks and professionals who want a proper knife rather than a supermarket block. You'll find Global, Wüsthof, MAC, Zwilling, Victorinox, Kai Shun and British makers such as Savernake, along with a large Japanese section, whetstones and sharpeners, chopping boards, cutlery and cookware. Knives are age-restricted, so buyers must be 18 or over and someone will need to sign for the parcel, with photo ID if they look under 25.

Delivery is by DPD. Standard UK mainland delivery costs £5.99 under £60 and is free over that, and many in-stock items can go next working day if you order before 3pm (£6.95, or £5.95 on orders over £60). Delivery to Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man is £12.50, and to Jersey and Guernsey £20. Because knives need an adult signature, they can't be left with a neighbour or in a safe place, so pick a delivery address where someone over 18 will be in. Unwanted items can be returned for a refund within 30 days of receipt using the store's returns form.

What's worth a look

Six picks from the shop, with the prices shown today. Most are in the current anniversary sale.

The Wüsthof Classic 20cm Cook's Knife is the classic German all-rounder, down from £145 to £99. If you'd rather keep your existing knives going, the knife sharpening service sends you a free, insured envelope, and the store says your knives come back in about a week.
