Pleasance & Harper is one of the oldest family jewellers in the country. It began in 1879 in Wine Street, Bristol, grew into a chain of shops across Wales, the Midlands and the West Country, and is now based in Hereford, where Mark Harper, the fourth generation of the family, runs a jewellery shop at 54 Broad Street and a watch boutique next door.

It suits anyone shopping for an engagement or wedding ring, a special-occasion watch or a gift with a bit of weight to it. The website covers its own diamond and platinum rings (including lab-grown diamonds), designer jewellery from Kit Heath, Clogau, Georg Jensen and Alex Monroe, watches from OMEGA, TAG Heuer, Longines, Hamilton, Tissot, Seiko and Garmin, pre-owned watches, and gifts such as SECRID wallets and Cross pens. It's an authorised stockist for its watch brands and buys directly from the makers.

What's worth a look

The Pleasance & Harper own-brand rings are the heart of the shop. The platinum rubover solitaire sets a 0.50ct round brilliant diamond (G colour, SI clarity) flush in a band of metal, which is a practical choice if you work with your hands. At the other end of the price list, Kit Heath's sterling silver pieces, such as the Blossom Flyte Honey Bee necklace, make easy gifts, and the LEGO clock and Clogau rugby keyring are fun extras for under £60.

Beyond selling, the Hereford shops offer jewellery and watch repairs, valuations, part exchange on watches and a gold buying service, which is worth knowing if you have old pieces to trade in.

Because the stock is high value, online orders travel by DPD with a one-hour delivery window and a security PIN, and someone has to be in to accept them: there's no safe-place option. If that's awkward, you can choose Click & Collect and pick your order up in Hereford instead.
