Carlsbad Plaza is a five-star superior spa and wellness hotel in Karlovy Vary, the 19th-century spa town in the west of the Czech Republic. It occupies four linked historic buildings that were once spa residences, close to the town's colonnades and mineral springs, and it opened as a hotel in December 2005 after a two-year restoration. You book direct on the hotel's English-language site, where prices are shown in euros.

It suits couples and friends after a few days of pools, saunas and good food, and also guests who want a longer stay built around spa treatments. You don't have to book a treatment programme to stay: room-only stays include buffet breakfast and daily use of Wellnessland Alt Karlsbad, the hotel's spa area with five pools, seven saunas and a relaxation room with heated water beds. Families are welcome too, and children under 2 stay free in an existing bed or cot.

What's worth a look

Here are three room types and three packages from the hotel's site, with the "from" prices per night shown today.

The Comfort room is the standard double, in the modern New House wing with a garden view. If you'd like more character, the Junior Suite is in the historic Old House wing, with stucco ceilings, a living area and views over the spa district. For a short break, the RELAX Package is the hotel's bestseller: two to four nights with breakfast, a daily relaxation treatment such as an aroma pearl bath or massage, and free parking.

Current offers

We don't have any Carlsbad Plaza codes yet, but the hotel's own packages are the main way to get more for your money. The RELAX Package starts at €219 a night (minimum two nights) and the stay with breakfast and Wellnessland entry starts at €201 a night. Under 2s stay free, and gift vouchers can be bought for stays, Wellnessland entry or any amount, which makes a neat present.

How to save more

• Book on carlsbad-plaza.com rather than through a third party: the hotel says its lowest prices and widest choice of packages are on its own site.
• Compare a package with a room-only rate. The RELAX Package includes parking, which otherwise costs €25 a night, plus a treatment every day.
• Pick your rate with care. Standard rates can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before arrival and need no prepayment, while non-refundable rates are charged in full and can't be changed.

Check-in is from 15:00 and check-out by 12:00, and the reception is open around the clock. Pets can come for €50 a night, and the hotel can arrange transfers from airports in the Czech Republic and abroad if you ask in advance.
