The English Bed Company makes upholstered beds, headboards and sofa beds in its own factories in Manchester and Blackburn. It is a trading name of Forest Sofa Ltd, a Salford furniture maker, and everything is built to order, with frames made from solid beech and covered in your choice of more than 150 fabrics and leathers. Sizes run from single up to grande emperor (7ft by 7ft), which makes it useful if you need a bed that is bigger than the usual super king.

It suits people who want a made-to-order upholstered bed and are happy to wait a few weeks for it. Most product pages quote around four to six weeks for handmade items. You can see many designs at the showroom on Ford Lane in Salford, which is open seven days a week, or order free fabric samples and a brochure first.

Delivery is handled by a two-person team, who bring larger furniture to the room you choose, unwrap it and ask you to check it before signing. Once your order leaves the factory, delivery can take up to 10 working days, and you are normally contacted about three days beforehand to arrange a slot.

What's worth a look

The Bloomfield Plain Scroll Bed, with its curved scroll footboard and plain headboard, is the brand's featured bed, and it starts from £1,135 in the October Sale. For a firmer mattress to go with it, the Ortho Master comes with 1000, 1500 or 2000 pocket springs and is fully turnable.

How to save more

• Check the clearance pages before ordering from scratch. The Lawrence Grande Emperor Bed in Passione Olive, for example, is listed at £950 against a regular £2,260, with a minor blemish noted, and clearance items are quoted for delivery in 2 to 4 weeks.
• Choose your size on the product page before comparing prices, as the headline price is for a single.
• If you want drawers or a gas-lift ottoman, look at double, king and super king sizes, as storage isn't offered on single or emperor beds.
• Bed assembly costs £50 extra on the delivery page, so if you're happy to build it yourself, leave that option unticked.
