Vila Galé is Portugal's largest hotel group, founded in 1986 by Jorge Rebelo de Almeida, who still chairs it. Its first hotel was Vila Galé Atlântico on the beach in Albufeira, and it now runs 52 hotels: 34 in Portugal, 13 in Brazil, four in Cuba and one in Spain. Many are built around families, with NEP Kids Clubs, children's pools and Satsanga spas, and the Vila Galé Collection brand covers historic and more upmarket buildings.

It is a good fit for UK families heading to the Algarve, Lisbon coast or Madeira, and for couples touring Porto, the Douro or the Alentejo. You book on the English-language site, and the Portuguese and Spanish hotels are priced in euros. The group also makes its own wines under the Santa Vitória, Val Moreira and Paço do Curutelo labels, and club members get money off those too.

What's worth a look

Vila Galé Atlântico is right by Galé beach, five minutes from Albufeira, and every room has a kitchenette, which makes self-catering breakfasts and snacks easy with children. For a city stay, Vila Galé Ópera faces the Tagus near Belém, five minutes from the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower, and hosts live opera once a week.
