Yas Island is a man-made island in Abu Dhabi, about 20 minutes from the city centre and 50 minutes from Dubai. It opened to visitors in late 2010 and has since become one of the Gulf's biggest leisure destinations. There are four theme parks, the Yas Marina Circuit, home of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, plus beaches, golf, Yas Mall and Etihad Arena. A Disney park has been announced too.

The official site at yasisland.com sells park tickets, Multi-Park Experiences, hotel stays and packages, and it is aimed at families and thrill-seekers. UK visitors should know that the local currency is the UAE dirham, and that there is a separate UK package with flights, booked through partner Kenwood Travel. Visitors can enter the parks with FacePass, Face Tag, a QR code in the app or a paper ticket.

What's worth a look

Here are two parks, two island hotels and the two packages that save the most.

Ferrari World Yas Island has more than 40 rides and attractions, including the world's fastest rollercoaster launch. SeaWorld Yas Island, the region's first marine-life theme park, is spread across eight realms with over 100 animal experiences and presentations. Yas Island suggests allowing six or seven hours for each park, so most visitors spread them over several days.

For somewhere to stay, The WB Abu Dhabi, Curio Collection by Hilton, sits next to Warner Bros. World and has movie-themed rooms, a kids' club, a splash pad and a 'dive-in' cinema. W Abu Dhabi is built over the Yas Marina Circuit itself, and its Superior rooms have private balconies overlooking the track or the marina.

• Visiting two or more parks? Book a Multi-Park Experience rather than separate day tickets.
• Families should price up Kids Go Free first, as free stays, park access and meals for children add up quickly.
• Set up FacePass in the app before you fly, so you skip the ticket queues and get the food and drink discount on day one.
