Yorkshire Bonsai is an online bonsai specialist run by a family company in Garforth, near Leeds. It sells trees for complete beginners as well as rarer specimens for people who already have a collection, plus the pots, soils, tools and wire that go with them. If you fancy a first bonsai, want a living gift that lasts longer than a bunch of flowers, or need a new pot or bag of soil for a tree you already own, it's worth a browse.

Every order is packed in-house, live trees go out by tracked 24 or 48-hour services with printed care instructions, and you can pick a preferred delivery date on the cart page. One thing to know before you start: live trees only ship within the UK because of plant movement rules.

What's worth a look

Here are six things from the current range, from first trees to gifts.

For a first tree, the Chinese elm starter kit in a 15cm pot comes with a drip tray and is listed at £55.95. The shop's FAQ names ficus and Chinese elm as good choices for UK homes, and the indoor ficus in a 15cm pot is £37.95. If you'd rather have flowers, the bougainvillea broom-style tree in a 20cm pot is £48.95. Experienced growers can look at outdoor trees such as the shaped Japanese white pine in a 16cm pot at £197.95, or the one-of-a-kind collection.

The FAQ page covers which trees are best for beginners, which are safer around pets, and when to repot (the shop suggests spring, every two to three years). There are care guides for individual species too.

Current offers

We don't have any affiliate codes for Yorkshire Bonsai at the moment, but the shop's own site has two standing offers:

• Free standard tracked delivery on UK orders over £40. Below that, standard delivery is £4.95, next working day is £7.45 (order by 1pm Monday to Friday), and express and Tuesday delivery are both £5.95.
• 10% off your first order when you sign up to the newsletter. The code is sent by email.

There's also a clearance section for discounted stock, mostly glazed pots when we looked. Many sizes were sold out, so it's worth checking back.

How to save more

• Sign up for the newsletter code before your first order, then plan the basket so it goes over £40 and qualifies for free delivery. A drip tray, soil or a pair of scissors can make up the difference.
• For gifts, the bundles already include extras, and gift cards come in £10, £25, £50 and £100 values if you'd rather let the person choose.
• Choose carefully, because live trees can't be returned if you change your mind or order the wrong one, and neither can sale or clearance items unless they're faulty.
