Runners Need: running shoes, gait analysis and kit for winter miles

Runners Need is a specialist running shop with more than 40 branches around the UK, from Aberdeen to Truro and a cluster in London, plus a website that carries the same range. It is part of Cotswold Outdoor Group, the business behind Cotswold Outdoor and Snow+Rock, and it stocks the brands most runners go looking for: Hoka, Brooks, Asics, Nike, On, New Balance, Saucony, Puma and Salomon, alongside clothing, hydration vests, nutrition and GPS watches.

It suits two kinds of shopper. If you're new to running, or you've had niggles in the past, the in-store gait analysis is the main draw: you run on a treadmill for 10 to 15 seconds while software records how you move, and staff use that to suggest shoes. It costs £15, but it's free if you buy running shoes in store or online within 30 days. If you already know what you like, the website's filters for gait type, cushioning and the kind of run you're training for make it quick to find your next pair.

What's worth a look

Here are six things from the Runners Need range for running through the darker months, with prices as shown on the site when we checked.

The Brooks Ghost 18 is a popular neutral daily trainer and comes in regular and wide fits, while the Hoka Speedgoat 7 GTX adds a Gore-Tex waterproof upper for muddy trails. Both were part of the 20% shoe offer when we looked, and men's versions are listed too. For early mornings and evenings, a rechargeable head torch such as the Black Diamond Storm 500 makes the dark evenings much easier.
