Cover4Rentals sells car hire excess insurance: a standalone policy that pays you back if a rental company charges you the excess after damage or theft. It was started by brothers Mark and Jon, who already ran the insurance business Eversure, after being frustrated by the price of excess waivers at rental desks. For UK residents, policies are sold by Eversure Limited of Guildford, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority; EU residents buy through a Maltese broker.
The UK site quotes single-trip cover from £1.64 a day. There are two levels, Silver and Gold. Gold reimburses up to £12,000 of excess and adds higher limits for personal accident, drop-off charges and curtailment, plus collision damage waiver cover for USA and Canada rentals. Both include personal possessions, misfuelling, keys, lock-out, towing, breakdown and road rage cover. You choose Europe, USA and Canada or worldwide cover, and can add UK rentals and family cover for an extra premium. Annual policies suit anyone hiring a car more than once a year.
You buy online before you collect the car and don't need the rental company's permission. If something happens, you pay the hire company's charge first and claim it back. Drivers must be aged 25 to 84.
