Hotel de Montaña Savegre, Reserva Natural & Spa sits in the Savegre river valley at San Gerardo de Dota, in the Talamanca mountains of Costa Rica, about 87 km south-east of San José and next to Los Quetzales National Park. The family behind it first came to the valley in 1973, and the hotel now looks after a private reserve of more than 500 hectares of cloud forest, with five marked trails, the Siwö lookout and the Savegre river running through it.
There are three types of room. Standard rooms are in a garden pavilion with two double beds and sleep up to four. Junior Suites are standalone cabins with one or two Queen beds and a bath, and Master Suites are cabins with a King bed, private jacuzzi and fireplace. Every rate includes breakfast, taxes and unlimited use of the reserve's trails. On site there's the Las Bromelias restaurant, the Los Robles bar and lounge, and the Del Río Spa with massages, facials, sauna and jacuzzi.
The area is best known for birdwatching: more than 250 species have been recorded in the reserve, and guided quetzal tours leave at 5:15am. Other tours include hiking, horse riding, a night walk, a páramo trip and a seasonal apple-picking day. Rates change with the season and are shown in the online booking engine for your dates. Bookings are paid in full when you book, with free cancellation up to 7 days before arrival (30 days for stays from 24 to 31 December).
