Savegre is a mountain hotel in San Gerardo de Dota, a valley in Costa Rica's Talamanca range about 87 km south-east of San José. The family behind it first came to the valley in 1973, and the hotel now sits inside its own private reserve of more than 500 hectares of cloud forest, next to Los Quetzales National Park. At 2,200 metres it's cool all year: the hotel says nights drop to between 5 and 12°C, so this is a fleece-and-fireplace kind of trip rather than a beach one.

It suits birdwatchers, walkers and couples who want a few quiet days in the forest as part of a longer Costa Rica itinerary. More than 250 bird species have been recorded in the reserve, and the resplendent quetzal is the one most people come for. Getting there takes two to three hours by car from San José, and the last stretch is steep and winding, so the hotel suggests staying two or three nights.

What's worth a look

Here are six parts of the hotel worth reading up on before you book.

The rooms come in three types. Standard rooms are in a garden pavilion with two double beds and sleep up to four, which works for families. Junior Suites are standalone cabins with a bath, and the Master Suites add a King bed, private jacuzzi and fireplace. Every rate includes breakfast, taxes and unlimited use of the reserve's five trails, from the easy 0.4 km Los Pioneros path to the demanding 6.2 km Los Robles trail, which climbs to around 2,600 metres.

The tours page lists the guided options. The quetzal tour leaves at 5:15am and lasts about two hours, and there are half and full-day birdwatching trips, a páramo tour, horse rides and a night walk. Birding tours are charged per booking for groups of one to four rather than per person, which makes them better value if you're travelling as a group. Prices change with the season, so the hotel confirms them by email for your dates.

How to save more

• Share a birding guide. Because birding tours are priced per booking for up to four people, a group of friends pays less each than a couple would.
• Check the cancellation window before you book. Cancellation is free up to 7 days before arrival, but for stays from 24 to 31 December you need to cancel 30 days ahead.
