About SimplyExcess
SimplyExcess sells car hire excess insurance: cover that pays you back if a rental company charges your excess after the car is damaged or stolen. It was founded by John Jansson, who the company says co-founded Insurance4CarHire in 2002 and has more than 20 years in the market, after an earlier career as a professional musician. SimplyExcess is a trading name of Konnektas Ltd, a London-registered company formed in 2023, which acts as an appointed representative of FCA-authorised Rush Insurance Services. Policies are administered by Coplus (Motorplus Ltd) and underwritten by Collinson Insurance (Astrenska Insurance Ltd).
The idea is that you decline the rental desk's own excess waiver and buy cheaper cover in advance instead. If you're then charged for damage, you pay the hire company and claim the money back. All policies offer up to £10,000 in excess reimbursement, and the cover includes tyres, windscreens, wheels, the roof and the undercarriage.
There are single-rental Daysaway policies, Weekaway policies and annual policies for unlimited rentals, split by region: UK and Ireland, Europe, Voyager, the Americas and Global. You need to be a UK resident aged 21 to 85. The company says it has a Which? Best Buy for car hire excess insurance in 2026, and it offers 10% off single-trip policies for electric and hybrid rentals.
