Mountain Warehouse Black Friday preview: up to 60% off, but read the 'was' price

Mountain Warehouse's Black Friday preview is live, with up to 60% off selected lines: down jackets from £54.99, waterproofs rated to 10,000mm for £54.99 and fleeces from £9.99. Its crossed-out prices aren't old prices, though. Here's what that means and how to save more.

Mountain Warehouse has started its Black Friday early. Its homepage now leads with a "Black Friday Preview", promising up to 60% off selected lines, with men's, women's, kids' and equipment sections. We read the product pages on 8 November: the cuts are real, but the crossed-out figures aren't old prices. Here's what's in the preview, what the pricing means, and how to stack the savings.

What's happened

The site banner reads "Black Friday Preview: Save up to 60% off selected lines", and the preview page is live now. Below it, the homepage pushes padded and down jackets, base layers, boots and 3-in-1 jackets: winter kit, just as the cold sets in.

Some of the biggest cuts we found against Mountain Warehouse's comparison prices:

Read the small print on the "was" price

Every Mountain Warehouse product page has a "How our pricing works" panel. It says the crossed-out figure is a "comparable price": what its buyers believe a product of similar quality would cost at full price from other leading brands. In its own words, it "is not intended to reflect a former price at which the product has sold."

So "68% off" means 68% below what Mountain Warehouse thinks a rival brand would charge. It doesn't mean the jacket was £169.99 last week. That doesn't make £54.99 a bad price for a 700-fill down jacket with a 3-year warranty. But judge each price against what the same kind of kit costs elsewhere, not against the crossed-out number.

Who it's for

It suits anyone kitting out a family for winter walks, school runs or a ski trip, and anyone who wants Christmas presents early. Mountain Warehouse has a banner promising extended Christmas returns, on top of its usual 60-day returns. Its site doesn't show the Christmas dates on the pages we could read, so check them at checkout if you're buying presents now.

Worked example: two waterproofs and two fleeces

  • Brisk Extreme Mens Waterproof Jacket: £54.99
  • Rainforest II Extreme Womens Waterproof Jacket: £54.99
  • Snowdon II Mens Fleece: £9.99
  • Camber Printed Womens Half Zip Fleece: £9.99

That's £129.96, which clears the £125 mark for free next-day delivery. Standard delivery is free over £50, so even small orders mostly qualify. If it's your first order and you sign up to Mountain Warehouse's emails for 10% off, that would take about £13 off. Check the basket total afterwards, as the lower total may no longer get free next-day delivery.

What to do now

  1. Make a list first. Preview deals are on "selected lines", so check the item you actually want is in it.
  2. Compare like with like. Look at the waterproof rating (mm), the warranty and the reviews against a similar item at another shop, not the crossed-out price.
  3. Use the sign-up 10%. It's for your first order only, and only on items sold and shipped by Mountain Warehouse, not its marketplace sellers.
  4. Get the right discount. Students get 10% through UNiDAYS. Blue Light Card members get 15% through Blue Light Card.
  5. Use click and collect. It's free on orders over £20 (£2.50 under), and Express Click & Collect is free and ready within 2 hours at its shops.

Questions

When does Mountain Warehouse's Black Friday start properly? It hasn't said on its site yet. The preview is live now, and its site already has Black Friday sections ready.

Will prices drop further on Black Friday? Nobody can promise that. If an item you need is at a price you're happy with and in your size now, the 60-day returns window gives you some cover.

Do marketplace items count? Some products are sold by other sellers on Mountain Warehouse's site. Free delivery thresholds and the sign-up 10% only apply to items sold and shipped by Mountain Warehouse itself.
