ChessSets.co.uk is an online chess shop run by JDS Toys & Games Ltd from Frome in Somerset. It launched in 2011 and is a sister business of Regency Chess, and orders ship from its UK warehouse. If you're after a proper wooden set for the living room, a tournament-size board for the club, or a chess gift that'll last, it's a good place to look.

Most of the range comes from specialist makers in Italy, Poland, Spain, India and Germany, with a few pieces made in England. You'll find complete sets, Staunton pieces sold on their own, boards in a wide range of sizes and woods, decorative chessmen, clocks and storage cases. Orders placed by 2:30pm on a weekday are dispatched the same day, and UK mainland delivery takes one to two working days.

What's worth a look

Six things from the shop on 12 October 2026, all showing a sale price against the regular price.

For a complete set that looks the part, the Atlantic Rosewood Chess Set pairs 3.75-inch rosewood and boxwood pieces with a 19.7-inch wenge board, and was £90 off when we checked. The Competition Staunton Walnut set is a more practical choice, with a 3-inch king, a 40cm board and a wooden case.

Collectors should look at the 1851 Reproduction Staunton Ebony Chessmen, modelled on the original Staunton design with a 4.4-inch king. If you want something to take on holiday, the Deluxe Hardwood Folding Travel set is magnetic, folds up and costs £69.30.

Boards come in walnut and maple, wenge, palisander, burl and lacquered finishes, from 12.5 inches up to 23.6 inches, so you can pick one to match pieces you already own. There are also chess clocks and storage cases, including padded sheesham boxes for pieces up to 4 inches tall. Delivery to the UK mainland uses couriers such as FedEx, UPS, DX and Royal Mail, and the shop also ships to the USA. If you need to send something back, refunds are made within two to six working days of the parcel reaching the warehouse, and damaged or faulty items are collected and replaced.
