Envato Market is the marketplace side of Envato, the Australian creative company founded in Melbourne in 2006 and now owned by Shutterstock. Its best-known store, ThemeForest, sells ready-made website themes and templates from independent designers and developers: WordPress themes for shops, blogs, portfolios and directories, plus Shopify, WooCommerce, HTML, Joomla, Webflow and Figma templates.

ThemeForest is one of several Envato Market stores: there are sister marketplaces for code and plugins, video templates, music, graphics, photos and 3D files, all selling one-off downloads from independent creators. It suits small businesses, freelancers and hobbyists who want a professional-looking site without paying for a custom design. You buy each theme once, and every item has its own page with a live preview, the author's name, the number of sales so far and a list of what's included. Most come with future updates and six months of support from the author.

What's worth a look

Here are some of the long-running bestsellers and a couple of more specialist themes on ThemeForest right now.

Avada is one of the most-bought items on the whole marketplace, with more than a million sales, and costs $69 for a Regular Licence. If you're building an online shop, WoodMart and Flatsome are both WooCommerce themes worth comparing, at $69 and $59. Shopify store owners can look at Avone, a Shopify theme at $89.

Before you buy, open the live preview and click through the demo pages on a phone as well as a computer, since that's how most of your visitors will see the site. The sales count on each page is a useful sign of how widely a theme is used, and a popular theme tends to have more tutorials and answers online if you get stuck. Specialist themes such as Listeo, at $119, come with booking and directory features built in, which can save buying separate plugins, but read the item page carefully: Listeo's author says they don't support it.

Current offers

ThemeForest's WordPress category has an on-sale filter that lists themes currently shown at a reduced price. When we looked, the weekly bestsellers included the Pixer digital agency theme at $79, down from $159. Sale prices change, so check the item page before you buy.

Envato also runs Envato Elements, a separate subscription with unlimited stock downloads, priced in pounds for UK customers. Its Core plan is £12.50 a month billed annually, and students get 28% off.

How to save more

  • Check what support is included before you buy. Most themes include six months from the author, but some, such as Listeo, say the author doesn't support the item.
  • If you want a full year of support, add it at checkout. The 12-month extension is shown at a lower price when you buy the theme than its full listed price.
  • Choose the right licence. The Regular Licence covers one site or product that's free to its users; you only need the much dearer Extended Licence if people pay to use what you build.
