Store spotlight: HostelPass, a yearly discount card for Europe's hostels

HostelPass is a yearly travel discount membership for people who stay in hostels around Europe. It's run by HostelPass Ltd, registered in London, and was started by two University of Southern California students after one of them struggled to find decent, affordable places to stay while backpacking with a rail pass. For €29.99 a year, members get discount codes for partner hostels, tours, museums and travel extras in more than 40 cities.

It works simply. You buy the pass, log in, choose a partner and click "Book Now". HostelPass then gives you a unique code and sends you to the hostel's or provider's own website to book directly. It suits backpackers, interrailers, students on a gap year and anyone planning several European city breaks in a year. You must be 18 or over, and you can add friends to the same pass at checkout.

What's worth a look

Here are six partners from the current list, with the member discount shown on each page today.

Discounts apply to private rooms as well as dorms, which is good news if you like a hostel's atmosphere but not a 12-bed room. Avenue Hostel in Budapest is one of the most generous partners, with 20% off plus free breakfast, while YellowSquare Rome adds 20% off drinks and tours to its 10% room discount. Beyond hostels, the London Party Pub Crawl is 40% off for members, though not on Fridays, Saturdays or big party nights.

HostelPass says it has visited and vetted the hostels it lists, and the partners range from big social hostels to smaller, quieter places. Each hostel page lists features such as female-only dorms, 24-hour reception, kitchens, laundry and bars, along with check-in and check-out times, so you can compare them before booking. Remember that each hostel sets its own rules, such as minimum stays at weekends or age limits for dorms.

Current offers

We don't have any HostelPass codes in our feed yet. The main deal is the membership itself:

• €29.99 for a year of member discounts, with up to 40% off partner hostels, tours, experiences and more.
• Free extras at dozens of partner hostels, such as a welcome drink, late checkout or breakfast.
• Gift option: buy a pass as a present, and it lasts a year from the day it's redeemed.

How to save more

• Work out whether it pays for itself. A pass is worth it if your hostel bookings and activities over the year will save you more than €29.99, so price up a couple of stays first.
• Choose pounds at checkout on the buy page rather than euros, so your card provider doesn't add a conversion fee.
• Book the activities as well as the beds. Museums, food tours, eSIMs and day trips are included, and that's often where the bigger percentage discounts are.
