motoin.de is a German online shop for bikers, run from Aachen since 2007 by two riders, Marcel Maaßen and Farshid Chalatbari. It lists more than 200,000 items, from helmets by AGV, Arai, Scorpion, Nolan and Sena to clothing from Alpinestars, Dainese, Büse and Scott, plus luggage, sat navs, intercoms and casual wear. The site has an English version and UK visitors see prices in pounds, which makes it easy to compare with UK shops.

There's one important thing to know before comparing, though. Prices shown to UK visitors exclude German VAT, so UK import VAT and any handling charges may be added when the parcel arrives, and delivery is charged on top. Check the full cost at checkout. In return you get a wide choice and a generous voluntary 100-day return policy on top of the legal 14-day right to cancel. It suits riders who know what they want, or who are hunting for a size or colour UK shops have sold out of.

The range is easy to browse by product type, brand or riding style, and helmets are split into full-face, flip-up, open-face and off-road. Gift cards are available from €25 up to €200 if you're buying for a rider and don't know their size. Payment options include PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay and the main credit cards, and orders ship with DHL or UPS. If you're ever near Aachen, you can order for Click & Collect and try things on in the showroom.

What's worth a look

Six picks from motoin's helmets, kit and electronics, with prices as shown to UK visitors.

The Scorpion EXO-R1 Evo Carbon Air Onyx is £231.46 and comes with a dark-tinted visor and Pinlock insert in the box. Touring riders might look at the Sena 60S Evo twin set at £478.39 or the Garmin zūmo XT3 sat nav at £365.76. motoin shows big percentage savings against RRP on many items, so treat those as a guide and compare the final price.

Current offers

We don't have a motoin code yet, but the shop runs these itself:

• Free gift on bigger orders: a motoin RoadWipe microfibre cloth when you spend over £166.60, or BikeBalm leather balm over £334.04. One gift per order, and it can't be combined with other promotions.
• Sale section sorted by discount, with bands for over 30%, 40%, 50% and 60% off RRP.
• Newsletter sign-up, which motoin says brings exclusive offers.

How to save more

• Use the 'Seen cheaper?' form if you find the same item for less at another online shop; motoin may make you an individual offer.
• Bundle helmet, gloves and accessories into one order to reach a free-gift threshold and pay for delivery once.
• Allow for import VAT when comparing with UK retailers, and check the 100-day returns terms before ordering several sizes.
