PDF Expert is a PDF app for Mac, iPhone and iPad from Readdle, a developer founded in Ukraine in 2007. The company behind it, Readdle Limited, is registered in Dublin. Readdle says the app has 30 million users, and Apple has named it an Editors' Choice and an App of the Year runner-up.

It's for anyone who deals with PDFs regularly on Apple devices: freelancers sending contracts, students annotating reading lists, landlords and tenants filling in forms, or office teams marking up drafts. You can read and highlight, edit text and images, fill in and sign forms, merge and reorder pages, redact sensitive details and convert PDFs to Word, Excel, PowerPoint or JPG. It can also recognise text in scanned pages (OCR) and translate documents.

The app is a free download, and the paid Premium plan unlocks the full set of tools. On the UK pricing page the Yearly plan is £72.99, billed annually, and covers iPhone, iPad and Mac. The Lifetime licence is £129.99 as a one-time payment, but it's for the Mac version only, and Readdle says some future features may cost extra. The Mac app needs macOS Monterey or later.

What's worth a look

These are the PDF Expert features and plans worth exploring on Readdle's site.

PDF Copilot is the newest addition: an AI assistant that summarises long PDFs and answers questions about them. For everyday jobs, the signing and form-filling tools are the ones most people will use, and they work on an iPhone as well as a Mac.

On iPhone and iPad you can also collect a customer's signature on the spot. For long documents, there are Day, Night and Sepia reading themes, and an AI-powered Enhance tool tidies up scans by fixing distortions, removing shadows and improving contrast.

Current offers

We don't have any discount codes for PDF Expert at the moment. These are the offers on Readdle's own pages:

• Students and educators can verify an educational email for 30% off the annual plan.
• The Lifetime licence for Mac is £129.99 as a one-time payment, instead of a yearly subscription.
• Both paid plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you have time to test the Premium tools properly.
• The app itself is a free download.

How to save more

• If you only work on a Mac and plan to keep using it for years, compare the £129.99 lifetime price with paying £72.99 every year.
• Try the free version first. If you mainly read and annotate, you may not need Premium.
• Teams can buy seats through PDF Expert for Business, which puts every licence on one invoice.
