Pennells: a 1780 Lincolnshire garden centre with a busy Christmas shop

Pennells has been growing and selling plants in Lincolnshire since 1780, when Richard Pennell set up a nursery in Sturton by Stow. It is still in the same family, now run by the seventh and eighth generations, and has three garden centres in Lincoln, Cleethorpes and Sleaford, each with its own restaurant. Its old catalogues were full of fruit trees, roses and clematis, and the firm opened its first garden centre in Lincoln in 1966.

The webshop is more than an add-on to the centres. It covers garden furniture from brands such as Kettler, Hartman and Supremo, parasols and outdoor living, gardening products, wild bird food, pet care, kitchenware, toys and puzzles, and a large Christmas department with more than 600 lines. Pennells is also an official Lemax stockist, with hundreds of pieces for building a Christmas or Halloween village. It suits anyone in Lincolnshire who wants to order online and collect, and shoppers further afield after decorations, collectibles or a garden furniture set delivered by DPD or pallet.

What's worth a look

Here are six picks from the Christmas, Lemax, furniture and gift pages, with prices as shown on Pennells' site.

The 2.4M Slim New Jersey Spruce is a good choice for a high ceiling in a narrow room. Pennells lists 1,012 branch tips, hinged branches and cones and berries already on the tree. For something smaller, the Lego Christmas Tree is a 2-in-1 set that builds one large tree or two small ones, which makes it a handy stocking filler for LEGO fans. Collectors can add pieces like English Lane, a pub and curiosity shop that runs on batteries or a Lemax adaptor.

Outside the Christmas range, the Aberdeen Mosaic Bistro Set folds flat for winter storage. The Afternoon Tea for Two voucher is a gift for someone near one of the centres, posted free by Royal Mail 48.
