The TEFL Institute of Ireland, or TEFL.ie, sells online courses that qualify you to teach English as a foreign language, whether abroad or online. It is run by The TEFL Institute Limited, registered in Ireland, and belongs to the TEFL Institute Group. Its founder, Ian O'Sullivan, began teaching English more than 30 years ago and launched one of the earliest online TEFL courses in 2000.

It suits gap-year travellers, career changers and anyone hoping to teach online from home. Its main selling point is the Level 5 TEFL Diploma, which is regulated by Ofqual, the UK's qualifications regulator. The UK site at tefl.ie/gb shows prices in pounds. Courses are nearly always listed against a much higher "original" price, so judge them on the current price alone.

What's worth a look

Here are the three core courses and three shorter ones, with the UK prices shown today.

The 120-Hour Advanced TEFL Certification is the entry-level option at £155, and the site suggests it is enough for countries with minimal entry requirements, such as parts of Asia and Latin America. The 180-Hour Level 5 Diploma, at £225, is the Ofqual-regulated qualification the institute compares to CELTA level. The 300-Hour Advanced Diploma, at £325, adds specialisms such as exam teaching and online teaching.

All three come with six months' access, weekly online mentoring sessions, job coaching and a mobile learning app. Shorter add-ons include a 30-hour Teaching English Online course and a 60-hour Level 5 Award in online and one-to-one teaching. Beyond courses, the institute runs internships and supported job placements in countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, Cambodia, Italy and Germany, and has its own jobs board.
