TerraCycle is the recycling company behind the Zero Waste Box, a simple idea: you order a box for a type of rubbish your council collection won't take, fill it up, send it back, and TerraCycle recycles what's inside. Its UK shop sells boxes for everything from crisp packets and coffee capsules to stationery, fabrics and kitchen bits, and it's aimed at households, schools, offices and events alike.
It suits anyone who has a drawer of dried-up pens, a cupboard full of used coffee pods or a workplace that gets through mountains of snack wrappers and wants them dealt with properly. TerraCycle says its recycling is third-party accredited under the Recycled Claim Standard, audited by Bureau Veritas, and you can track your recycling history. Shipping is carbon neutral.
One thing to check before you order: the boxes don't cover British Overseas Territories, Crown Dependencies, the Channel Islands, the Hebrides, Shetland, Orkney or the Isles of Scilly.
What's worth a look
Here are six boxes from the UK shop, with the starting price for the small size.

Plastic Packaging - Zero Waste Box™Flexible and rigid plastic packaging, any brand£118.00View at TerraCycle

Office Supplies / Stationery - Zero Waste Box™Pens, folders and staplers for offices and schools£146.00View at TerraCycle
Kitchen - Zero Waste Box™Cutlery, water filters and other kitchen items£164.00View at TerraCycle
If you'd rather not sort anything, the All-In-One box is the easy option. It takes mixed non-hazardous waste, including flexible and rigid plastics, from £170 for a small 25 x 25 x 46cm box, rising to £338 for medium and £466 for large. It does exclude batteries, electronics, paper and light bulbs. If most of your waste is one thing, a dedicated box usually costs less. The Plastic Packaging box starts at £118 and takes flexible and rigid packaging from any brand. The Coffee Pods and Capsules box starts at £136 and takes aluminium and plastic pods from any machine.
For offices and schools, the Office Supplies / Stationery box (from £146) takes pens, folders, staplers and the like. The Kitchen box (from £164) handles non-electronic items such as cutlery, water filters and cleaning accessories. None of the boxes accept hazardous waste, so nothing sharp, flammable, toxic or infectious.
Current offers
- Refer a friend: a friend you refer gets 15% off their first Zero Waste Box, and you earn £10 of store credit for each referral.
- The shop also promotes Zero Waste Pallets, bulk bags for businesses with large volumes of hard-to-recycle waste.
We didn't see a general sale on the UK shop when we looked, and the product pages showed no reduced prices.
How to save more
- Pick the narrowest box that fits. A single-stream box like Plastic Packaging starts well below the All-In-One, so it's worth sorting if your waste is mostly one type.
- Split a bigger box. The medium and large sizes cost more upfront but hold far more. Sharing one between neighbours, a school or an office kitchen spreads the cost.
- Use the referral credit. If you already use TerraCycle, refer friends who'd use it too. The £10 credit per referral goes straight towards your next box.
