Toyday is a small, family-run toy shop in Callington, Cornwall, that calls itself an old-fashioned toy shop. It has sold online since 2003 and has a shop on the corner of New Road and the High Street in Callington, though that's only open for a few hours a day from Monday to Thursday, so ring first. Online, it's a good hunting ground for classic and nostalgic toys, science kits, wooden games and pocket-money bits for party bags and stockings.

Most toys cost under £15. Some cost well under £1, like a pack of crayons or a mini troll at 50p. The site looks a little old-fashioned, but each product page gives clear prices, contents and sizes.

The shop is organised in a way grandparents will recognise: baby toys sorted by age, bath toys and rubber ducks, art supplies and craft kits, dolls and puppets, games and puzzles, juggling and magic, marbles, spinning tops, clockwork and tin toys, and plenty of wooden toys. There's also a "Find me a toy" tool on the homepage that filters by boy or girl, age and budget. That's handy when you need a present for a child you don't know well. Toyday posts abroad too, and if you live overseas and want to send toys to someone in the UK, it charges UK postage rates.

What's worth a look

For curious kids, the Wooden Periscope Making Kit (£8.99) and the Galileo Thermometer Experiment Kit (£10) are hands-on and good value. The Train Set in a Tin is a sweet gift at £10: a battery-powered train with three carriages and 12 pieces of track, packed in a vintage-style tin.
